Jaipur is known as the pink city of India, which is rich with cultural heritage and refined tradition. The city possesses of the finest and oldest museums and prominent structures. Albert Hall Museum is the oldest and cultural museum in the Jaipur. In 1876 it was constructed and designed by Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob to greet King Edward VII as Prince of Wales, in the time when he visited in India. After construction, it was only opened for the Royal family, but it was made open to public after 10 years.

 

It exhibits the rare object like textiles of Royal Family, gorgeous carpets, paintings, metal and wood crafts, various type of pottery, arms and weapons of Royal families flora and fauna of the state, toys, dolls and even an Egyptian mummy that belongs to the Ptolemaic Epoch, ivory, stone, metal sculptures, colorful crystal works etc. In this great museum, one gallery is dedicated to Mehndi, body art and great Rajasthani motifs and designs.

 

History

The Albert Hall is located at the center of Ram Nivas Baug, situated just few hundred meters away from the Pink city which is the facing the City that welcomes all visitors of the city. Albert Hall is actually a museum, which is believed to be one of the oldest in the Rajasthan as well as India, one of the finest museums of the 19th Century. It was envisaged by Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh-II but bought to life by Thomas Holbein Handley and designed by Sir Samual Swinton Jacob. It is now a house of antiquities.

 

Attractions

In 1885, it was opened for public. Albert Hall galleries generally exhibit the textiles or royal family, attractive paintings, various craftworks, pottery, arms and weapons, culture of the state and also an Egyptian mummy that belongs to the Ptolemaic Epoch. It also displays famous carpet that represents the Persian garden carpet with running water streams.

 

In 1960, the lower part of the museum was redesigned to totally present the culture and the heritage of the state which also includes the lifestyle of the various tribes of Rajasthan. The greenery of the Albert Hall is the most spectacular and eye-catching part of the visit which is decorated with numerous pieces of art of Rajasthan. So it is appropriate that itself a piece of fine art, an architectural marvel.

 

Albert Hall is positioned in such a place where you cannot avoid it while you visit different parts of the pink city and also provide shelter to a big number of pigeons. Pigeons can be observed on the terrace of the hall all round the year.

The building is located in Ram Niwas Garden, just outside the city wall and opposite of the new gate of the pink city, Jaipur. Appropriate address is Ram Niwas Garden, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur, Rajasthan, 302004, India. Being in the center of the city, one can reach the Albert Hall Museum easily. According to the tourist, the best time to visit hall is evening, where people can enjoy the architectural beauty and enjoy horse ride as well.
