Gangaur Festival is one of the major festival of India. This festival is quite popular among various communities and different states. Although the name of the festival is not the same for every state, but the festival takes place in the same time. This festival is a tribute to Lord Shiva and Parvati. Here are some basic information about the festival and related rituals to this festival:


The festival in general cases celebrated during the summer in the month of March or April. The dates of this festival are being determined by the Hindu calendar and due to this fact the date for next year's event cannot be stated at an early stage. In cases in general, most of part of the country, this event is celebrated only one day, but in Jaipur a huge 18 day festival takes place in this event. Many tourists from various part of the country and as well as abroad visit this destination to witness and be a part of this festival.


Gangaur Festival is mostly popular among women across the country. Many women pray for the long life of their husband in this festival. Many women carry water pot and join the rally of thousand in the city in the early morning. In the early morning around 7 am the rally starts from city palace and at the end of the noon it reach Talkatora. The rally finished to Talkatora around 2 PM. There are a number of cultural performance can be observed in the rally. There are many folk dancer and singer take part in this rally to showcase their talent in front of thousands of tourists from various part of the country and different countries as well. Many women practice fast during this period. Married women practice fast for a long time during this festival and many unmarried women practice fast too. But the ritual is less rigid for unmarried women, they are allowed to eat food once a day during the festival.


The landscape of the city changes completely during these festivals. One can observe a number of street food corners with various regional cuisines. Mehandi is a special attraction of this festival. One can visit a mehandi shop nearby and can have one if they wish to. To explore the regional cuisine one must visit the street food shops. These are mainly popular in various forms of sweets made in this part of the country.


At the very end day of the festival those women who are practicing fast during the festival breaks the pot carried by them during the rally and dispose the broken parts of the pot to a water tank or a river and with this the festival comes to an end.
